NPHS senior Olivia Dobesh was one of 200 students selected from the state of Nebraska for a Student Leaders Event where participants had the opportunity to visit with Nebraska Governor, Jim Pillen.
Olivia listened to lobbyists involved in state government and large businesses discuss what they do in their respective roles. Her favorite part of the event was hearing lobbyists share stories of how they got to where they are today.
Making the experience even more memorable, Olivia’s question submitted for the governor was selected for a response. Olivia was honored to stand and ask Governor Pillen, “Could you share a pivotal moment in your life, and how it shaped your leadership philosophy?” Governor Pillen recalled a time he was told have to choose between football and becoming a veterinarian. He chose both and made it work. Governor Pillen’s overall message was to never let anyone try to decide your dreams for you. You can do whatever you want to do; don’t listen to others when they try to limit you.
For other students who may have this same opportunity, Olivia recommends bringing coffee and a notebook. There is a lot of useful information, particularly for those considering careers in state government, and great advice useful for all aspects of life. With so much great information available, you want to take it all in. Olivia shared, “This was an inspiring event that taught me more about the state government and our leaders, and gave me the chance to represent our school in a positive, professional light.”
Join me in congratulating Olivia on this honor, and thanking her for doing an outstanding job of representing our community and schools.
